A few weeks ago we posted a video of PBS’ “History Detectives” where they verified the authenticity of a 1965 Strat believed to be the iconic guitar Bob Dylan went electric with at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. As stated in that post, it finally went up for sale at Christie’s Auction House today after a lengthy legal battle over ownership. It was estimated that the guitar would command up to $500,000, but it obliterated that figure. It sold to an absentee bidder for $965,000, the most any guitar has fetched at auction, beating out Clapton’s “Blackie” Strat which sold for $959,500 in 2004.
All I can say is WOW. Read more about it at the Charlotte Observer (link).
